SKA RATING

SKA is an environmental assessment method developed in the United Kingdom by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for fit-outs and refurbishments of commercial office spaces. It aims to encourage sustainable and environmentally responsible practices during the interior design and construction of office spaces. SKA certification provides a framework for minimising waste, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in these projects.

Applicability:

  • SKA Rating is specifically tailored to assess the environmental and sustainability performance of interior spaces within commercial office buildings.
  • It focuses on fit-out and refurbishment projects, allowing organisations to make their office spaces more sustainable.

Assessment Categories:

  • SKA Rating evaluates various sustainability categories, including energy and CO2 emissions, water usage, materials, waste, pollution, and wellbeing.
  • Each category has specific criteria and benchmarks for performance.

Certification Levels:

  • SKA Rating provides a performance rating on a scale from one star to three stars.
  • Higher star ratings indicate a more sustainable and environmentally responsible fit-out or refurbishment.

Assessment Process:

  • Projects are assessed based on evidence provided by the project team.
  • A qualified SKA assessor reviews the project’s documentation and verifies compliance with SKA criteria.

Benefits:

  • SKA Rating helps organisations reduce the environmental impact of their office fit outs and refurbishments.
  • It promotes resource efficiency, waste reduction, and energy savings.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to sustainable office design and construction practices.

Adaptability:

  • SKA Rating can be adapted to specific project goals and requirements, allowing for flexibility in achieving sustainability targets.

Continuous Improvement:

  • The SKA Rating methodology is periodically updated to align with evolving sustainability practices and industry standards.

Cost Management:

  • SKA Rating encourages cost-effective sustainability measures, helping organisations manage project budgets more efficiently.

Industry Recognition:

  • SKA Rating is recognised and supported by the RICS and is becoming increasingly accepted in the commercial real estate and construction industries.

Sustainability Goals:

  • SKA Rating contributes to broader sustainability goals by addressing the environmental impact of office fit outs and refurbishments.
